Help me understand the quote “live each day as if it were your last”

As I sit and study the day is coming to an end, and for the most of it all I’ve done was study physics and math, and for the next four years this will be the biggest part of my day, (civil engineering student). If this was my last day why would I do that?
Top Comment: I always interpret it to mean " if you didn't wake up in the morning would you be happy with your day". I still have to go to work and do the things I don't want to do but if I can get the few things in that I want to get done everyday than I lived that day like it was my last. You shouldn't avoid responsibilities but that doesn't mean you can't have a few moments to yourself everyday
